Finding Effective Diets – Why Some Diets Work While Others Fail

Thursday, July 17, 2008

Finding effective diets is certainly a lot easier today than it used to be.

I know that sounds pretty silly; after all losing weight is really hard…right? Well it can be but it does not have to be.

Finding effective diets is so much easier now because scientists and nutritionists have a much better understanding today of what controls weight loss and how our bodies naturally respond to most dieting methods.

Finding effective diets is as simple as looking for those weight loss programs that are built around a few simple understandings of what happens to us physiologically when we start a dirt program.

In the past; the best advice that doctors could give us was to simply eat less. Now that will work; mind you; but it is hard to do. Any diet that leaves you feeling hungry or unsatisfied will be very difficult to stick with.

In recent years there have been a whole slew of new diet programs that promise that you can lose weight without giving up food. Some of them even say you can eat until you are stuffed and still slim down. Do they work? Sometimes they do for some people; other times not. The way I gauge a successful diet plan is not by whether or not you lose weight; but by whether or not you can keep it off.

We already talked about calorie counting, eating less; above. It almost always fails because it’s just too hard to stick with.

Then there are the “no-carb” diets that encourage you to eliminate most of an entire food group from your diet. Is that even healthy? I rather doubt it.

And there are “low-carb” diets that say we should only eat “good” carbs. I’ve tried them all and I had a little success losing some weight; but not in keeping it off. Furthermore; no long into this type of diet; I figured out that it was really simply a variant of the calorie counting method.

In finding effective diets we should look for these five things:

  1. You should expect fairly quick; measurable results. That will keep you motivated.
  2. It can’t be too restrictive…that makes it hard to follow.
  3. You have to be able to eat enough so that you don’t often feel hungry.
  4. It must create a “negative calorie balance”; burning more calories than we consume.
  5. It needs to take into account what medical scientists have discovered about how our bodies respond to dieting.

Any weight loss plan that incorporates those five factors will be the one most likely to succeed in the long term. Sure, there will still be a need for a little discipline and self control; but just by encompassing those factors listed above; the need for self control is minimized; it is not like you’re walking around feeling deprived.

In finding effective diets; the single most important factor is that the weight loss plan must consider what science has discovered about our body’s natural response to dieting.

Weight loss (burning calories) is controlled by the metabolism. Burning calories is caused by the metabolism. If the metabolism is running at its peak; calories are burned more quickly; if it’s running more slowly; the calories are burned more slowly. Guess what fuels the metabolism and makes it run at its peak. Why, calories do!

That is why finding effective diets used to be hard. You gain a little weight; so to lose it you eat fewer calories; but by eating fewer calories your metabolism slows down in order to conserve calories.

The most effective way to overcome this physiological fact is through a process known as calorie shifting. Weight loss plans that incorporate calorie shifting recognize that the body expects a routine and it adjusts itself to that routine in metabolic terms. Through calorie shifting; we keep “shaking things up” so that the metabolism doesn’t settle in to a slower routine.

Calorie shifting diets require us to eat four meals per day. This good in that we never feel starved. That means that these plans are much easier to stick with for the long haul. They also require us to alternate the kinds of food that we eat and when we eat them. This is what really makes the plan work.
